Why Visit Bayeux Cathedral

The Bayeux Cathedral is a must-visit sight for anyone coming to this marvelous French city. Not only is it an architectural gem and the symbol of Bayeux but it also played an essential role in the history of France and England.

Notably, it is believed that in this church William the Conqueror made Harold Godwinson to take the oath which would later be broken leading to the Norman conquest of England.

The site of the Cathedral dates back to the Roman times, while the Norman Cathedral was built in the 11th century and was consecrated in 1077 under the ruling of William the Conqueror.

Having been later severely damaged in the 12th century, the Cathedral was again elevated in the 15th, but this time in the Gothic style. Actually, the construction was completed only in the 19th century!

The Cathedral is also on the list of the tallest churches of the world, owing this position to its central tower built from 1477 to 1479.

The Cathedral is also famous for being a long time home of the renowned Bayeux Tapestry.

The unique 70-meter-long embroidered cloth depicts the events connected with the Norman conquest of England, referring to such historical figures as William the Conqueror and Harold Godwinson.
