Why Visit the Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum, or the national art gallery of France, is the world's largest and most-visited art museum. Located in the heart of Paris, on the right bank of the Seine River, the Louvre houses around 38,000 art objects, occupying the total area of 72,735 square meters (782,910 square feet).

These numbers are equivalent to 100 days that you would spend in the museum without any sleep looking at each object for only 30 seconds.

The museum is set in the Louvre Palace, which was built as a fortress back in the 12th century. Later on, with the expansion of Paris, the fortress lost its protective function, and the castle was converted into a palace to become the primary residence of the French Royalty for another century.

One hundred years later, during the French Revolution, the building has officially become a museum, opening its doors to the public on August 10, 1793. Displaying only some 38,000 artworks, the Louvre officially owns about 460,000 objects divided between eight departments, from Egyptian and Near Eastern antiquities to the prints and drawing of the last three centuries.

Among the most famous pieces are Leonardo's Mona Lisa, Rembrandt's The Supper at Emmaus, and Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People.
