Why Visit Nyhavn
Nyhavn, or the New Port, is an absolute must-visit during your tour to Copenhagen. Since the old times, the district was one of the most vibrant places of the Danish capital and continues to attract travelers from all over the world.
The construction of the canal area started in 1670 by the order of the king Christian V, as he wanted to create a getaway from the sea right to the center of the town, the market King’s Square.
Today, Nyhavn enchants with its captivating atmosphere of “hygge” and the charming colorful surroundings. Always exuding life, this bustling pedestrian quarter is full of shops, cafes, and bars, some located even within the ships, thanks to which Nyhavn has gained the reputation of the “longest outdoor bar in Scandinavia”.
At the beginning of the promenade, there is a huge anchor, a memorial dedicated to the sailors who died during World War II. Moreover, the harbor of Nyhavn is considered to be the most fairytale place in Copenhagen in the literal sense of the word, as at least two houses located on the embankment once served as a home for the famous writer Hans Christian Andersen.
In fact, after visiting the place, it becomes clear how such wonderful fairy tales came out from under his pen. Narrow crooked streets, multi-colored toy houses, the calm surface of the harbor, and beautiful ships give pure inspiration.
